Wigan v Villa: Lambert hails Weimann's "drive and hunger"

Harrison

Paul Lambert reckons Andreas Weimann has the "drive and hunger" to take his game to the next level.

Lambert was aware of the Austrian striker's potential before he arrived at Villa having heard glowing reports from former boss Martin O'Neill and his coaching staff.

But since taking the reins last summer he has been amazed by Weimann's exceptional work ethic.

And Lambert believes the 21-year-old's insatiable appetite for the game will lead him to a successful career.

"He scored that last minute goal against Fulham, so I knew bits about him," said Lambert.

"I knew he was still in and out. He was here under Martin as well. I think Wally, Robbo and the gaffer spoke highly of him and he was just a young kid at the time.

"But you are never quite sure until you come in yourself to see if he can actually do it.

"The big thing that strikes me is his work ethic. That's the big thing. You don't need to be the greatest player on the planet but if you have got a work ethic it can take you far in the game, if you've got that drive and hunger to succeed."

Lambert says Weimann has benefited from having an extended run in the team for the first time in his career.

The academy graduate was on the fringes of the senior side under former boss Alex McLeish.

But this term he has gone on to feature 37 times in all competitions, scoring 12 goals.

"He has been exceptional, Andi," added Lambert.

"I know his main position is probably through the middle off a striker but his performances on that right side, coming off the lines and things like that, have been outstanding.

"The thing is with Andi last year, he was probably in and out all of the time. What we've done is given him a run at it - a sustained run.

"One thing about Andi is he is a natural finisher. He knows where the goal is which is great for us.

"The big thing for me is whether Andi Weimann is on x-amount of money, I think you've always got the same player.

"Success won't go to his head, I don't think. I don't think money will go to his head and that is a big compliment.

"Whatever he earns or whatever success he gets, I think he'll always be the same."
