Wigan v Villa stats: Agbonlahor set to continue impressive run

Our friends over at football stats website WhoScored.com take a look at the Wigan game and a claret and blue fan favourite who could be pivotal up front.

Wigan have failed to win any of their previous six Premier League games at the DW Stadium against Villa, with the visitors coming out on top in four of those.

Nevertheless, the away side will not be in for an easy ride against this season's FA Cup winners, despite Roberto Martinez's side having had a draining week, both physically and emotionally.

Paul Lambert knows exactly what threat The Latics carry from the reverse fixture this season, but his team comes into this encounter in significantly better form.

Villa have won each of their last six matches against teams that were in the bottom half of the table at the time of meeting.

Lambert's Lions have also opened the scoring in six of their last seven matches, including the weekend's narrow defeat to Chelsea, with the 3-0 defeat to champions Man Utd the only time that they have failed to do so in that run.

The Old Trafford game is one of only three matches out of Villa's last twenty-one in all competitions in which Lambert's side have failed to scored.

With thirty league goals since the turn of the year, representing 67% of the team's overall tally this season, the Young Lions clearly have one of the most in form attacking line-ups.

Villa can also take confidence from an excellent away record of late, with only Arsenal and Liverpool picking up more points from their last four matches on the road (9).

The visitors, however, will need to cope without goal talisman Christian Benteke this week, but can lean towards a favourite son to continue an impressive run away at Wigan.

Agbonlahor

Gabby Agbonlahor has only scored more league goals against Everton in his career (7) than he has against The Latics (5) and with Benteke suspended the onus will be on our longest serving player to provide the goals.

It's fortunate, then, that the forward comes into the final game of the season in great form having scored six goals and picked up an assist in his last eight league appearances.

Indeed, the 26-year-old has been one of the most improved players in the Premier League since the turn of the year, having struggled early on in the campaign with injuries.

Agbonlahor had scored just once in the league before the New Year and has netted eight since, with his average shots per game more than doubling in that time (1 to 2.4).

In turn, his chance conversion rate has leapt from 7.7% to 23.5% in 2013, having hit the target with 38.2% of his efforts compared to 23.1% before the Swansea game on January 1.

In terms of minutes played in England's top-flight per goal, Agbonlahor has struck every 142 minutes this year, compared to 978 in the first four months of the season.

Elsewhere his average figures for key passes (0.7 to 0.9) and successful dribbles (0.4 to 1.2) per match have also risen significantly and it's no surprise that his statistical rating from WhoScored.com has rocketed from 6.33 to 7.11.

Villa haven't lost any of the five games in which Agbonlahor has scored against Sunday's opponents, with three of those strikes coming at the DW Stadium - and another goal would certainly put the travelling fans in party mood this weekend - Stan Petrov masks and all!
