Match report: Villa Ladies 1-4 Coventry Ladies

Brown

Villa Ladies crashed to a 4-1 home defeat on the B6 pitch to a ruthless Coventry City Ladies team.

It was Villa Ladies who started the brighter, stroking the ball around the big pitch and deservedly taking the lead when a Chloe Jones corner was half cleared to the edge of the box where Emma Follis controlled and rifled the ball into the bottom corner.

But minutes later, Coventry Ladies were level when a straight ball through the middle split the home defence wide open with Karen Clough finishing expertly.

The second half started the same as the first half, Villa Ladies trying to control the game and Coventry Ladies exploiting the spaces on the pitch.

Coventry Ladies took the lead midway through the second half when a lightning quick counter attack eventually fell at the feet of ex-Villa player Nat Reay, who blasted past Megan Walsh from six yards.

Minutes later, it was 1-3 when centre-back Kim Walton powered home a free header from a corner.

In the last minute, Maz Gauntlett struck a free-kick off the bar that hit keeper Walsh on the back and went in.

Boss Joe Hunt said: "First up, credit must go to Chris Holloway and his Coventry team.

"They were head and shoulders above us once they got it back to 1-1.

"They stuck to the game plan and punished us when they got the chance. It was never a 4-1 game but full credit to them.

"For the first 15 minutes we played our best football of the season. We stroked the ball round, varied our play and put Coventry Ladies under some serious pressure.

"We deservedly took the lead through Emma Follis but then for some reason stopped doing it.

"We then produced our worst 75 minutes of the season. Defensively we were horrendous.

"From front to back we were not good enough. We stopped getting pressure on the ball. We looked ragged at times and stopped doing the things that has made us successful this season.

"At 1-1 we should've gone again but the 75 minutes of play are not acceptable. The team have been told that.

"It was a great opportunity to do well and they fell below the level expected.

"We had a great turn out for the game but we let the club and supporters down. For that I can only apologize.

"We'll be back in training on Thursday preparing for our last game of the season away at Manchester City.

"I need to see a response from the players in training and in the match on Sunday."

VILLA LADIES: Walsh, Mannion, Lowe, Merritt, Petrovic, Richards, Follis (Fergusson 65), McCue (Cusack 30), Davies (Stringer 75), Clarke. Subs not used Moran, Merrick.
