Vlaar: We want to finish with a flourish - regardless of other results
Ron Vlaar insists Villa are determined to finish the campaign with a flourish - regardless of Wigan's result against Arsenal this evening.
Villa's Barclays Premier League status will be guaranteed if Wigan fail to win at The Emirates.
But a victory for the Latics would ensure a tense finale for Paul Lambert's team at the DW Stadium on Sunday.
Vlaar and his team-mates will be glued to their television sets tonight knowing their top-flight survival mission could be complete.
Nevertheless, the skipper says the claret and blues are planning to end on a high even if the contest proves to be a dead rubber.
"It's Wigan's last chance on Tuesday, so they have to win," said Vlaar.
"Of course it's an important game for us. Of course it would be nice if Arsenal win. Maybe they will help, but we will see. It's important for us.
"I think I'm going to be watching the game. I don't know if we'll see it together. We haven't spoken about it.
"But I've said it before we have it in our own hands and if we have to do it ourselves, we're capable of doing that.
"All of the teams have to try to get good results so we will see what happens on Tuesday and Sunday.
"The most important thing is well still have it in our own hands with the last game. If we have to do it ourselves then we will.
"I look forward to giving the fans a good result, whatever happens at Arsenal."
