Monday media watch [13.05.13 AM]: Reaction to Chelsea clash
Birmingham Mail: From a match that had everything, Aston Villa got nothing. Tomorrow from a match where they can do nothing, they need everything. Villa couldn't care less if Arsenal v Wigan produces similar controversy and entertainment - as long as it produces the only thing they lacked on Saturday, a positive result in their favour.
Birmingham Mail: Captain Ron Vlaar reckons Villa's narrow defeat to Chelsea shows how far they have come since their Stamford Bridge drubbing less than five months ago. Vlaar missed the embarrassing 8-0 December loss through injury, but was proud to play in Saturday's return match at Villa Park, even though Villa were eventually beaten 2-1.
Guardian: Villa still have their own future to worry about after a defeat that was hard to stomach. After going ahead as a result of Christian Benteke's fine goal and playing against 10 men after Ramires was sent off, Villa were in charge until their Belgium strike, who had been lucky to escape a straight red card for elbowing Cesar Azpilicueta, was dismissed for a second booking.
The Sun: Ron Vlaar insists Aston Villa can handle Sunday's final test at FA Cup winners Wigan without 19-goal talisman Christian Benteke. The Belgian was sent off against Chelsea and will be suspended for the last-day drama at Wigan, who could overhaul Villa if they win their final two games.
Daily Star: The turning point for Chelsea, who also look certain to be without the injured Eden Hazard against Benfica, was the sending-off of Benteke. When the Villa striker was shown the red card on the hour, for a second bookable foul on Terry, the complexion of the game changed.
Times: Paul Lambert believes that Christian Benteke must continue to play in an aggressive style, even though his dismissal was the turning point in Saturday's incredible game.
Sky Sports: Ron Vlaar claims confidence within the Aston Villa camp remains high as they look to avoid any final day dramas. Villa have yet to secure their Premier League status with just one more fixture remaining on their 2012/13 calendar.
