Lambert hopeful on Lowton despite injury withdrawal

Brown

Paul Lambert is hopeful of having Matt Lowton available for Villa against Chelsea on Saturday.

Lowton was an ever-present in the Barclays Premier League this season until injury put a halt to that impressive record.

He was subbed just before the half-hour mark after feeling a twinge in his thigh.

But boss Lambert believes the problem, which first came to light in the win over Sunderland on Monday, isn't too serious.

He's also confident, if Lowton fails to take his place, that Eric Lichaj can do a job there for the team after impressing in his first league appearance since West Brom in January.

Lambert said: "Matt has just hurt his thigh.

"He hurt it on Monday and felt it on Friday. He felt better on Saturday morning.

"We took a chance on it. It was a little risk. But I don't think it's too bad.

"It's a bit of tightness so hopefully it's not too bad.

"We'll have to wait and see how he's feeling. But we just couldn't take the risk to leave him on at Norwich. It was just too much to ask.

"But he's been outstanding. He's been excellent for us, he really has.

"I also thought Eric coming in was fantastic. He's not played for months and months. But he was excellent. He came on and did really well."
