Lambert on survival race: We just keep on going

Brown

Paul Lambert says his team will "keep going" after insisting the survival race is not finished yet.

Lambert was happy to see his side reach forty points at Norwich, often held up as the magical target number in Barclays Premier League safety circles.

But alongside that delight at hitting the milestone mark is a fierce determination to finish the job, with two big games remaining in Chelsea [h] and Wigan [a].

Lambert is relishing the task, especially given the manner in which his team are playing, summed up best by the six points collected in back-to-back games against Sunderland and Norwich.

Asked whether Villa had enough points, he said: "I don't know. You keep going don't you.

"It's another huge win. We have had massive games against Sunderland and Norwich and to pick up six points from them is very pleasing.

"Everyone says forty points is the magical mark. But we have to wait and see.

"We are playing ever so well at the minute and that's all you can ask for.

"But you are never safe until you have actually done it.

"The other thing is that we are three points away from ninth, which is incredible.

"The pressure is always there in football. You always have that as a football person. I'd rather have pressure than not have it.

"But I am proud of the team that we have got. We have showed great character and been outstanding.

"Everybody was saying we were dead and buried and that we're young and not going to do it. But the lads are playing ever so well."

Lambert believes the confidence boost for his emerging side from surviving the basement battle will be huge as he sets about building a side that claret and blue fans will be proud of in the coming years.

He added: "We are growing together. We are getting better and better with every single game.

"The big thing if we get safe will be the mental side of the game because they have taken some beatings and just kept going.

"They haven't got their head down. I feel we are playing football which is definitely worthy of staying in this league."
