Norwich v Villa stats: Benteke is top marksman in 2013

Our friends over at football stats website WhoScored.com take a look at the Norwich game and a powerful claret and blue striking star who has seen his figures rocket up this year.

Villa will look to build on their emphatic win over Sunderland when they travel to a familiar Paul Lambert stomping ground on Saturday.

It won't be the first time that Lambert has returned to his former home at Norwich, of course, with the boss hoping his side can recreate their success at Carrow Road in the Capital One Cup earlier in the season when they won 4-1.

The reverse fixture in the Barclays Premier League ended in a stalemate, with a late Michael Turner goal cancelling out Christian Benteke's opener after Joe Bennett was sent off early in the second half.

The red card in that game was the turning point, with Villa attempting all of their seven shots before the left-back's dismissal.

Villa have had more shots per game than their hosts on Saturday [11.5 to 10.7], as well as more possession [45.7% to 42.9%] and a better pass accuracy [77.8% to 73.6%].

While Norwich will likely prove to be a tough test in front of their home support, having gone unbeaten in seven home top-flight games, they have only won two of their eight home matches in all competitions in 2013.

Meanwhile, only the league's top eight sides have picked up more points on the road this season than Villa [17], with Lambert's Lions picking up crucial wins at Reading and Stoke over the past few weeks.

Benteke

One player whose form certainly brings about cause for optimism is talismanic targetman Christian Benteke.

The Belgian's second half hat-trick against Sunderland took his tally for the season to eighteen in the league and twenty-two in all competitions, becoming the first claret and blue player to score over twenty in a season since Juan Pablo Angel back in 2004.

The 22-year-old has scored in both of his matches against Norwich this season with his goal against the Canaries at Villa Park back in October representing only his second league goal for the club.

The Belgium international's record since then has been outstanding and enough to see him voted second in the PFA Young Player of the Year award in a sensational debut season in the Premier League.

Since the turn of the year only eleven players have scored more than five league goals, with Benteke two clear of second-placed Robin van Persie, with thirteen.

The powerful forward has only had more shots per game [3.33] in 2013 than three of those players, meaning his conversion rate is the best of the eleven, at 26%.

Encouragingly for Villa, his closest rival in terms of shots per goal in the same timeframe is Gabby Agbonlahor [24%], who is on an impressive run of his own with six goals in the New Year.

It is Benteke again, however, who comes out on top for shot accuracy [52%], with the league's top scorer Robin van Persie [50.8%] again second best to the young striker.

The fact that his respective figures for both conversion rate and shot accuracy have rocketed from 9.8% and 29.4% respectively since January 1 is the best indication of the progress that Benteke has made in becoming one of the top-flight's finest marksmen.

With no Norwich player netting more than five league goals this season, the visitors certainly have the upper hand in terms of firepower and will be hoping to add to their twenty-seven goals in 2013 alone.

In fact, only Liverpool have netted more in that time in the entire league.
