Wednesday media watch [24.04.13 AM]: Vlaar on survival run-in

Birmingham Mail: Joe Bennett is battling to be fit for Villa's increasingly significant survival showdown against Sunderland at Villa Park next week. Bennett limped off with an ankle problem towards the end of Monday night's 3-0 defeat to Premier League champions Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Birmingham Mail: Ron Vlaar has challenged Villa to cope with the pressure by picking up crucial Premier League points against relegation rivals Sunderland, Norwich and Wigan. Three of the claret and blues' final four games involve fellow strugglers, with Monday's Villa Park clash against the Black Cats and trips to Carrow Road and the DW Stadium.

Birmingham Mail: Gary Gardner has been advised by Villa manager Paul Lambert to strike a balance between eagerness and erring on the side of caution. He enjoyed his first action since severely hurting his knee last August when he had a 45-minute run-out in Sunday's under-21s defeat at Fulham.

Mirror: Skipper Ron Vlaar insists Aston Villa cannot afford their battle to beat the drop to be decided on goal difference. Villa are 17th and their return stands at minus 27. But Wigan are a place below them with a game in hand and a superior goal difference.

Daily Star: Paul Lambert is just relieved that Aston Villa did not have their confidence destroyed at Old Trafford. Villa went down 3-0 as Manchester United clinched the title against them with ease on Monday.

The Sun: Ron Vlaar praised Aston Villa's defence for refusing to fold during Manchester United's title party. Robin van Persie's first-half hat-trick left Villa just three points ahead of 18th-placed Wigan having played a game more.

Sky Sports: Ron Vlaar believes Aston Villa can take some encouragement from their second-half performance against Manchester United as they bid to secure Premier League survival. Villa went down to a 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford, with all three goals coming inside the opening 33 minutes as Robin van Persie netted a hat-trick to help United clinch the title.
