Vlaar: We won't let Man United defeat damage our confidence
Ron Vlaar insists Villa's confidence won't be dented by the 3-0 defeat to Barclays Premier League champions Manchester United.
Despite being blown away by Robin van Persie's stunning first-half hat-trick in Monday's clash at Old Trafford, Villa put up a much sterner challenge after the break and created several opportunities of their own.
And Vlaar believes the second-half display will provide Paul Lambert's team with some encouragement going into the crucial survival showdown against Sunderland.
The Dutchman says it was important Villa didn't fold after being rocked by United's early goals.
"It's a positive thing," said the Villa captain.
"We all know what happened at Chelsea and it didn't happen this time. Some people expected it but it's a positive and improvement.
"The second half was a lot better. We had better positions, we didn't lose possession and kept the spaces a lot smaller. It was more difficult for them.
"We had some chances in the first half as well but every time we lost the ball they killed us.
"You have to move on but it would be nice if we could have done more to stay in the game and get a result.
"After 10-15 minutes the game was over but we have to go on and what we showed in the second half was a lot better.
"We have to go on with the way we played in the second half."
