Fulham U21 v Villa U21: Cowans targets strong finish to campaign
Gordon Cowans insists Villa won't give up in their bid to catch group leaders Everton in the Barclays U21 Premier League.
Villa U21s go into today's clash at Fulham three points behind the Toffees in qualification group one, although the Merseyside outfit have a game in hand.
Cowans knows the disappointing 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Villa Park on Monday has left his team facing an uphill battle.
Despite being the better side for long periods, Villa were punished for a number of second-half mistakes and had to settle for a point.
It means the boys in claret and blue will probably need to take maximum points from their final two games, starting this afternoon at Fulham's Motspur Park training ground.
"It is even tougher for us now as we are going to have to win the next two games," said Cowans.
"We've just got to keep focussed and pushing ourselves on.
"That's part and parcel of football. You learn as you go along and you develop and you shouldn't make these mistakes. You do it once then you learn quickly."
Cowans is determined to see his team rectify the mistakes made against Chelsea.
The Villa coach felt there was a drop in work rate in the second half.
"It was a shame we couldn't see it through," he added.
"But I thought we deserved to be ahead in the first half. We were the better side, we worked hard and we played at a good tempo as well.
"They came out and they upped the ante. They pressed us all over the place, put us under pressure and basically worked harder than we did which is not good enough.
"We can't accept that because I said before the game you should never come off a football pitch feeling you haven't given your all."
Today's game against Fulham kicks off at 2pm.
