Baker: We're good enough to see ourselves over the finish line

Harrison

Nathan Baker is confident Villa will take care of their own business in the top-flight survival battle.

The claret and blues sit one place above the Barclays Premier League drop zone with five games remaining.

But Baker insists Villa are capable of accumulating enough points to stay up - without having to rely on their rivals slipping up.

And the Worcester-born centre-back says Paul Lambert's side are determined to avoid a tense last-day finale against Wigan.

"The main thing we have to think about is ourselves," said Baker.

"It's in our hands and that's our focus: what we do.

"It's about us and what we do for the rest of the season.

"If we carry on playing like we have been we're confident that we'll be OK.

"Obviously we're hoping to be safe by the time we go to Wigan, that's what everyone wants to do.

"But if we had to go there and get a result we'd just keep going and doing what we've been doing.

"We're confident and we know we can do it."

Baker felt Villa were unlucky not to take another maximum haul against Fulham on Saturday.

But the 21-year-old believes the point may turn out to be a valuable one.

"Throughout the game I thought we had the upper hand," he said.

"Fulham managed to pull a goal back which was unfortunate from our perspective but after that we pushed forward to try and get a winner.

"That pressure didn't tell in the end but I would say we performed really well.

"It's a shame we didn't come away with three points.

"We didn't want to come away with nothing, however, so we'll be happy with what we got.

"If you're not going to win the game you want to get at least a point out of it."

Baker says Villa can be pleased with their points return from the last five games - and he is keen to see that momentum continue.

"We just need to keep taking the points," he added.

"It's another step towards the finishing line and we've picked up some good results lately with ten points from five games which is a really good return.

"Obviously the aim now is to push on and get the results we need so that we can push up the table.

"We don't have a target as such but we're trying to get as many points as we can from the games we have left."
