Villa Ladies 2-1 Portsmouth Ladies: We're into League Cup final
Villa Ladies can now look forward to the League Cup final after seeing off Portsmouth Ladies 2-1 in the last four encounter.
They will face Leeds Ladies at York City on May 5.
Jade Richards opened the scoring for the hosts just before the break with a wonderful header.
Portsmouth Ladies came back into it after the interval with a stunning finish from Sarah Kempson.
But Villa Ladies didn't capitulate and instead showed their quality and heart with a winner soon after, Chloe Jones showing immense bravery to nod in the decider.
In the closing stages, returning goalkeeper Megan Walsh showed her class with some stunning takes as the visitors threw everything at the claret and blues in search of an equaliser.
But Joe Hunt's team stood strong and emerged victorious to much delight at the final whistle.
Thrilled Hunt said: "It took us 15 -20 minutes to get into the game.
"The wind was horrendous for us in the first half. Credit to Portsmouth too, they were very strong in the opening stages. They were causing us all sorts of problems.
"They hit the bar which was a major let off but after that we controlled it.
"We got the ball into Carly Davies, Emma Follis and Kelly Clarke.
"We got into some great opportunities and a mixture of good defending and bad finishing kept the score at 1-0. Their goal was a great finish but it was our fault for overcomplicating things in the build-up.
"But fair play to my team, they went again and scored a deserved winner.
"It was a big decision for us to include Megan in goal. She's been training hard for nearly a month now and her return to fitness after five months came at the right time.
"We put Megan through some tough sessions this week and she was keen to play. She took some great crosses, especially one at the end when she plucked it off the forward's head.
"Jade continued her fine form - a goal and an assist - not bad for a centre-back
"Chloe took her goal superbly. She was brave because she knew if she made the header she was going to get clattered by the onrushing keeper.
"All my squad have contributed to this cup run. We've played seven games in the competition and every player has had some minutes.
"They all deserve credit. Players don't like missing out on games but they know 22 players don't fit into 11. They won't play every minute.
"We've been effective this season because we've been fresh. Players have come in a done a great job.
"We have a final to look forward to but also some league games - starting with Portsmouth at home again next week."
