Stoke 1-3 Villa goal picture focus: Stunner from Lowton!

There were plenty of plaudits after Matt Lowton scored a howitzer to secure the win at Stoke.

But the one which perhaps went unnoticed was delivered by the unlikeliest of players.

Asmir Begovic, the keeper who was beaten from 30 yards, sought Lowton out post-match to congratulate him on his stunning effort.

That was a brilliant gesture from a superb stopper and evidence that the human aspect of football is very much alive and kicking.

Begovic, to be fair, had been superb all afternoon, single-handedly keeping Stoke in the contest in the first-half and the early part of the second-half.

His save from Jordan Bowery gave the Potters hope and they capitalised on Villa's inability to hit a killer second with a goal from former Wolves midfielder Michael Kightly.

At that point Begovic would have worn a big smile, thinking that he had helped rescue an unlikely point.

But he had no chance when Lowton smashed home the scintillating strike, which sent the away core fans into delirium.

He didn't have much chance with the third goal, either, Christian Benteke finishing the contest.

But it was Lowton who was the name on everyone's lips and he trended on social media site Twitter for much of the evening as viewers got set to relive the moment on MOTD.

Indeed MOTD host Gary Lineker, a mean scorer himself, praised the right-back pre-programme, with a tweet of congratulations.
