Chelsea U21 v Villa U21: Cowans' team seeking progress

Four days after Villa conquered Chelsea in the NextGen Series final, the two clubs are set to meet again at U21 level this afternoon.

The boys in claret and blue are back in action in the Barclays U21 Premier League with a trip to Chelsea's Cobham training ground [ko 1pm].

It is a chance for Villa to leapfrog second-placed Middlesbrough and close the gap on leaders Everton who are six points ahead.

But Chelsea are only two places and two points behind Gordon Cowans' team.

As well as beating the west London outfit to lift the NextGen trophy, Villa also earned a morale-boosting 3-1 win over Sunderland in the U21 league on the same day.

Daniel Johnson scored two delightful strikes, while Courtney Cameron also chipped in with a goal.

Coach Cowans is likely to go with a similar squad for today's clash, with many of the players who featured in the NextGen finals weekend in Lake Como are expected to be handed a rest.

Follow all the action from this afternoon's U21 clash with our live audio and text commentary from 1pm.
