Carruthers: We must aim high and build on our NextGen triumph
Samir Carruthers insists Villa's NextGen Series stars must kick on and use their success as a springboard towards greater things.
Carruthers skippered the claret and blues to their magnificent victory over Chelsea in the final of the prestigious European competition on Monday.
The showpiece clash in Lake Como was watched by first team manager Paul Lambert, who was on hand to congratulate the Young Lions after the final whistle.
Carruthers - who has made three senior appearances for Villa - says the NextGen heroes must aim high and look to build on their triumph.
"We have to carry on with our careers," said the 19-year-old.
"We can't just stop and say we've won the NextGen trophy.
"It is a good aim to have as a youngster but ultimately you want to be breaking into the first team.
"But it is a great piece of history for the academy and it shows we are bringing good players through."
Boss Lambert has taken a keen interest in the club's development teams and has watched most of the NextGen fixtures.
And Carruthers says the gaffer's support has given the youngsters an extra boost.
"He has supported us in nearly every game," he added.
"Every game he could possibly get to he was there.
"He has been a great support and a great help.
"He had his words at half-time as well and he has just been so positive to us.
"I can't thank the whole coaching staff enough - they have all been outstanding to us and they've helped us so much."
