From the Archives: When Villa sent huge festive feast to London

During the past few weeks, claret and blue staff have been busy undertaking various fundraising activities to raise £50,000 for Acorns.

There have been raffles, cake sales and auctions in aid of our official charity partner.

Supporting charity is not something new to the club, however.

Back in 1909, Villa supported the Daily Mirror Christmas Pudding Fund, which aimed to provide seasonal treats for the poor children of London.

It was the second year we helped out the national newspaper appeal, alongside the work we already did with the Birmingham Daily Mail Christmas Tree Fund.

The King contributed one large pudding while The Queen supplied one hundred smaller puddings from the royal kitchens but there can't have been many bigger ones that the one supplied by Villa.

This gargantuan pudding, weighing 56lbs, was neatly iced with the inscription 'Aston Villa Football Club. Xmas Greetings to the Kiddies 1909.'

It was so big that when it was packed in its case for despatch to the capital, the parcel weighed 86lbs.

It was also decorated with claret and blue ribbons.

The Villa News & Record commented on Christmas Day 1909: "It will be interesting to know how many 'kiddies' will partake of Villa fare this Christmas.

"We may rest assured that many, many youngsters will bless the name of the old club and keep a kindly recollection in the corner of their hearts for the claret and blue."

Let's hope the children enjoyed their Villa feast!
