Villa U19 v Olympiacos U19: Carruthers - Villa must box clever
Samir Carruthers insists Villa need to be streetwise in the NextGen Series clash against Olympiacos as they look to go one better than last year and reach the semi-finals.
The boys in claret and blue bowed out at the quarter-final stage last term with an agonising quarter-final defeat to Marseille.
Carruthers was involved last time around and admits Villa played into the French side's hands at times.
But the midfielder believes his team-mates can use that experience to ensure a different outcome against Olympiacos at Villa Park tonight.
"We were in it last year and got to the quarters and we are in the same stage now," said Carruthers.
"So hopefully we can go one further and progress.
"Hopefully having had the experience last year we'll know what to do and what not to do this time.
"I felt like last year we played into Marseille's hands a bit.
"They were clever and we fell into their trap at times.
"But we've got the experience now to understand European football and what to do in these types of situations."
Greek giants Olympiacos topped their group ahead of Arsenal, Marseille and Athletic Bilbao, before edging out Belgian side Anderlecht in the last 16.
But Carruthers is adamant Villa will fear no-one having earned victories over the likes of Sporting Lisbon, Ajax and PSV Eindhoven.
"We've shown we can beat the best teams around Europe," he added.
"We've beaten the likes of Ajax, Sporting Lisbon, PSV, Fenerbahce and Celtic.
"We've beaten so many good teams now and that doesn't happen through luck.
"We've proved to ourselves that we are a force to be reckoned with in the competition. I think we've got a good chance."
Be there to cheer on the boys against Olympiacos.
