Vlaar, Benteke and Agbonlahor named in team of the week
Captain Vlaar returned to the side for the 2-1 win at Reading, after missing the Arsenal and Man City games with a calf injury.
And his performance was noted by analyst Garth Crooks, who selects a top side after each set of weekend results.
Vlaar was selected in a defensive line-up, also including Artur Boruc [Southampton], Maynor Figueroa [Wigan], Jan Vertonghen [Tottenham] and Andros Townsend [QPR].
Crooks said: "When I saw Villa defender Nathan Baker's panic as he inexplicably turned the ball into his own net, I thought "here we go again".
"But the 21-year-old Baker recovered admirably and that was largely down to the presence of Ron Vlaar at the centre of the Villa defence.
"The captain steadied the ship and led his team to a crucial away win against fellow strugglers Reading.
"Villa have conceded an average of 1.7 goals when Vlaar has played this season and 2.1 when he has been absent."
The team of the week is completed by Steven Gerrard [Liverpool], Jordi Gomez [Wigan], Shaun Maloney [Wigan], Juan Mata [Chelsea], Luis Suarez [Liverpool] and Ramires [Chelsea].
Meanwhile Christian Benteke and Gabby Agbonlahor have been selected in the WhoScored.com team of the week.
Benteke clocked up a mark of 9.1 while Agbonlahor notched up 7.3.
Benteke was second overall behind Jan Vertonghen who produced a highly-impressive mark of 9.3.
