Match report: Coventry Ladies 2-1 Villa Ladies
Villa Ladies lost for the first time in thirteen games and were sent tumbling out of the County Cup courtesy of a controversial injury-time penalty at Coventry Ladies.
Joe Hunt's side were eliminated from the competition at the semi-final stage, despite dominating for large periods of an engaging and enthralling encounter.
Coventry Ladies went one-up just after the break but that just led to a fierce fightback from the claret and blues.
Petrovic headed over from a corner while Davies shot wide from the angle as Hunt's team piled on the pressure.
Villa Ladies levelled on 70 minutes.
Merritt drove the ball out to Follis who skipped past the defender before driving down the line. She cut the ball back on to her right-foot, swung over a delicious cross that was glanced past Wood into the top corner by Davies.
This didn't stop Villa Ladies as they went in search of a winner.
With seconds to go, Villa Ladies had a loud penalty claim for handball waved away by the referee.
Mere moments later Coventry countered with an incisive move through the middle.
There was another handball claim from Villa turned down but the resulting shot smashed into Petrovic from point-blank range. This time the referee pointed to the spot in the final minute.
Petrovic was sent off for foul and abusive language while Helen Dermody calmly stepped up to dispatch the penalty into the top corner.
Boss Hunt said: "I'm gutted for the team. To lose a game in that fashion is not nice.
"We dominated the game from start to finish but we only have ourselves to blame.
"If you create that many chances you have to take them.
"The referee to be fair to him will give an honest call on the decisions. Personally it looked harsh considering the others that had gone before but it doesn't really matter what I think.
"The sending off was extremely harsh as well. Dani played very well again but unfortunately for us now she'll have to serve a ban.
"I spoke to the ref after the game and he felt it was the right decision. That's his call and we move on.
"I must give some credit to Chris Holloway and his Coventry Ladies team. They were very well organised and made it hard for us. The longer the game went on the more confidence they got.
"They gave everything they had which made it a lively game. Good luck to them in the final.
"We move on to the next game which is another away trip, this time to Watford in the league."
