Guzan: I need to be cool not crazy between the sticks
Brad Guzan insists staying cool between the sticks will be key as he aims for a succession of shut-outs in the coming weeks.
Guzan says he cannot afford to have a "crazy head" and go trying to deal with every ball that flies into the claret and blue box.
He preaches that composure is a vital ingredient in a goalkeeper's armour, especially given Villa's position in the lower reaches of the table.
He said: "You can't decide before a game that you are going to come for balls with a crazy head on your shoulders. You have to be sensible about it.
"If the ball is there to come for, then you come for it, plain and simple.
"If it is not then you hope your back four gets a head on it and clears the ball. So it is a bit of give and take and each game is different.
"Each game presents different tasks, different moments where you have to make a big save or come for a cross. You read the game as best you can, make a decision and go with it.
"As a goalkeeper you try to help your back four, the guys in front of you, relieve pressure when you can. That is part of the position.
"You take the knocks, you take the bruises and you dust yourself off and get on with it.
"There is no other way really."
Despite the intensity of the run-in, Guzan says it's "exciting times".
He added: "We see the quality that we have in the dressing room day-in and day out. To go to a place like Anfield and get a result, to be leading against Manchester United, these are positives to take away from the last few months.
"We know we can go places and get results and that is why you play the game.
"These are the exciting times. You have to stand up to it, you have to face it and you take in the moments."
