Villa v West Ham media watch [10.01.13]: Vlaar on the attack

Sunday Mercury: Captain Ron Vlaar has vowed Aston Villa's set-piece softies will turn a corner when Sam Allardyce, Andy Carroll and Co attempt to strike a Hammer blow to their survival chances today. An encounter with a West Ham team notorious for their direct style will give Villa's creaking backline another stiff test this afternoon.

Star on Sunday: Ron Vlaar admits Premier League rivals are bullying soft-centred Aston Villa - with non-stop aerial attacks. Not that Villa's Dutch skipper blames teams for targeting Paul Lambert's strugglers in such blatant, crude fashion. Far from it. Indeed, given Villa's shocking inability to defend set-pieces this term, Vlaar insists he would do exactly the same if on the other side of the fence.

Sunday Mirror: Aston Villa skipper Ron Vlaar has told his teammates to start handing out rollickings - including to him. The Dutch defender owned up to being the man to blame for Marouane Fellaini's injury-time equaliser at Everton last week. But none of the other players in Paul Lambert's side took him to task about his error afterwards. Vlaar, 27, said: "If it had happened that one of the other players had a go at me, I would have accepted it because it was my mistake. "That would not be a problem at all for me. "Would it be a good thing if some of them were able to do that? Yes, of course, but everybody has to grow in their personality."

Sun on Sunday: Ron Vlaar wants his Villa team-mates to rollick him over his blunders. The Villa skipper admits his defence are leaking too many soft goals as they battle to beat the drop. Vlaar's gaffe gifted Marouane Fellaini an injury-time equaliser which cost Aston Villa two vital points against Everton. And as the Dutch defender prepared for another aerial assault from Andy Carroll today, he said: "Fellaini was my man, but the other players said nothing to me after the game. "I would have accepted it — that would not have been a problem at all.

Sunday Mercury: Paul Lambert insists he is still loving managing Aston Villa despite the threat of relegation hanging over the club. Villa host West Ham at Villa Park this afternoon increasingly desperate for a victory to kickstart their survival crusade. Lambert reckons Villa need five or six wins from their remaining 13 matches to safeguard their Premier League status. But despite the mounting pressure and perilous position in the drop-zone, the boss claims he is still getting job satisfaction.

Star on Sunday: Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert is looking for barnstorming Christian Benteke to add to his ten goals when his struggling outfit host West Ham today. And former Villa manager and player Brian Little reckons the Belgian striker, 22, could be the ace in the pack when it comes to avoiding the drop from the top flight.

Independent on Sunday: Aston Villa and West Ham both need to reverse recent form as the Claret-and-Blues go hammer and tongs in Birmingham today. West Ham have had a poor run away, dipping into the bottom half of the table after sitting sixth in November. Since then they have lost seven out of eight away games, a run broken only by a goalless draw at West Bromwich Albion. But with Andy Carroll back as the focal point of the attack they looked better in beating Swansea at Upton Park last Saturday, when Carroll scored the only goal. Villa's problem has been the opposite, with creditable away performances not matched at home.
