MORNING REPORTS

Birmingham Mail: French U21 international Yacouba Sylla will become Villa's first signing of the transfer window today - with another arrival expected before tonight's deadline. Sylla, a 22-year-old defensive midfielder, has been given a promising endorsement by former Villa boss Gerard Houllier following his £1.75m move from Clermont Foot. Houllier claims the powerful six-footer, who was linked with QPR and Fulham earlier in the transfer window, is highly thought of in their native France.

Daily Mirror: Aston Villa are set to snap up French midfielder Yacouba Sylla after missing out on Porto defender Rolando. U21 international Sylla is expected to join from Clermont for around £1.5m in boss Paul Lambert's first signing of the window. Premier League strugglers Villa were keen on Rolando, who was available to leave Porto on loan, but he is said to have accepted a switch to Napoli.

ESPN: Aston Villa are close to a belated first signing of the January transfer window, with a £1.75 million swoop for France Under-21 international midfielder Yacouba Sylla. Sylla, 22, who currently plays for Ligue 2 outfit Clermont Foot, has been linked with both Queens Park Rangers and Fulham earlier this month. Despite concerns that a jump from the French second tier to the Premier League may be too much, former Villa boss Gerard Houllier believes the player will be more than capable in Paul Lambert's side.

Birmingham Mail: Boyhood Villa fan Gabby Agbonlahor is confident the claret and blue faithful will not "turn" on Paul Lambert's team if they continue to give their all. Villa were booed off at half-time in Tuesday's 2-1 defeat to Newcastle but there was sympathetic applause as they left the field at Villa Park on the final whistle. Agbonlahor, as the only Brummie in Villa's first team, knows tensions are running high among fans as the club battle to preserve their Premier League status. But he believes the best way to keep supporters on side during this season of season is for players to keep putting in total commitment on the pitch.

Birmingham Mail: Hopes of Richard Dunne making a timely return to help Villa's survival mission have been dashed by yet another frustrating setback for the veteran defender. Dunne's claret and blue team-mates were relishing the prospect of the Irish centre-half being available to organise a backline which is lacking Premier League experience. But Paul Lambert revealed Dunne, who will almost certainly leave the club in the summer when he contract expires, has aggravated the injury again.

Daily Star: Gabby Agbonlahor is losing sleep over Aston Villa's alarming slump towards relegation. Villa's troubles are particularly worrying for the former England striker, being a boyhood fan of the club. "I have been tossing and turning at night after games, thinking: 'We could have done this better, we could have done that better.' It's been difficult."

Express & Star: Striker Gabby Agbonlahor today admitted Aston Villa's Premier League relegation struggles have given him sleepless nights. The claret and blues head into this weekend's clash with Everton in the bottom three after they were beaten 2-1 by fellow strugglers Newcastle on Tuesday. Manager Paul Lambert remains bullish about their chances of beating the drop, although boyhood Villa fan Agbonlahor revealed the team's form has left him with insomnia.

Sky Sports: Gabriel Agbonlahor admits Aston Villa's struggles towards the foot of the Premier League table are keeping him awake at night. A 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle United on Tuesday stretched Villa's winless run to seven games. An alarming slump has the club languishing second from bottom in the top-flight standings. Agbonlahor concedes that Villa's form is a cause for concern, but insists the players are doing all they can to turn things around.

The Sun: Gabby Agbonlahor admits that Aston Villa's relegation fight is giving him sleepless nights. Villa slid back into the bottom three on Tuesday after losing to drop zone rivals Newcastle. And Villa fan Agbonlahor confessed he is getting restless after a run of form that leaves them in real trouble.

The Sun: Tony Pulis is ready to make a deadline-day swoop for both Darren Bent and Jack Butland. The Stoke boss wants to end Bent's Villa nightmare. And he has also joined the race for Birmingham's England keeper Butland.

Birmingham Post: Gabby Agbonlahor understands the desire for deadline-day signings but regards Randy Lerner and Paul Lambert's transfer activity as a strong show of faith in the current squad. And the boyhood Villa fan is convinced the Villa Park faithful will not 'turn' against the team if they continue to give their all for the tense claret and blue survival cause.
