Villa youngsters handed Ajax trip in last 16 of NextGen Series
![]()
Tony McAndrew's team must get past the Amsterdam giants if they are to progress further in the prestigious European U19 competition. The mouth-watering clash is a rematch from last season when the two clubs met home and away in the group stages. Ajax were 2-0 winners at their De Toekomst training headquarters thanks to goals from Nick de Bondt and Viktor Fischer. But the claret and blues produced a sparkling performance in the return at Villa Park with Gary Gardner's hat-trick giving them a 3-0 success - a result which confirmed top spot in the group. Villa - who reached the quarter-finals last term - made it through to the knockout stages again this time around, finishing second place in a group that included PSV Eindhoven, Celtic and table-toppers Sporting club de Portugal. Home wins over PSV and Celtic, a draw at Celtic and a stunning 5-1 away win at Sporting were enough to send Villa through. The draw for the last 16 was confirmed last night after Ajax fought back to earn a 3-3 draw against Chelsea. Stay tuned for information on the date and kick-off time for the Ajax clash.
