West Brom v Villa: Vlaar eager to "give more comfort" to young guns

Brown

Ron Vlaar wants to "give more comfort" to the team, starting today at West Brom.

Vlaar admits he's missed being out there with the lads, leading the backline to clean sheets.

But now he hopes his return to action will start a run of good results.

He believes he can bring "organisation and morale" to proceedings.

He said: "I have had hard years before and what you do is work hard, there is no other way.

"I hope to be able to give more comfort in the game for the younger guys when I am back. I can't wait to be playing again.

"I really want to help the other players and I think I know what I have to do in this situation.

"You can never say the results would have been different but what I saw was that at some moments after we got a goal or we conceded a goal, we were a little bit unable to deal with this at times.

"I think I can help with the organisation and morale of the team on the pitch.

"You can always get a goal or concede a goal, that happens in games, but you have to get over this because we will get a lot of chances and we can score.

"We do have to learn quickly and we do have to learn from the mistakes we make and that we have made and not let them happen again.

"We need results, we know this and we have to realise that we are in this situation. But we are not far away from being able to turn things around. We believe this."

Vlaar believes integrating younger players into a team featuring senior stars is fairly simple.

But he thinks the fact so many experienced players - Darren Bent, Gabby Agbonlahor, Richard Dunne and Charles N'Zogbia - have been out has meant starlets "lifting themselves."

He continued: "It's easy for young people to be brought into a team with experienced players because they can lift with them.

"Because of injuries to senior players such as Gabby, Darren, Charles, Richard and myself, they have had to lift themselves, sometimes in difficult circumstances.

"That responsibility can be very difficult. Of course they will learn but the situation we are in now we have to take care of it together and we will."

Vlaar insists the total focus of the group is picking up results from now until the end of the season.

He added: "Results bring confidence. It needs time but we have to realise what situation we are in.

"We are in a difficult position right now and we have to realise that and get out of it one way or another.

"The focus has to be on getting results. We have to grow in doing that.

"Hard work and improving every day, using every training session to get better - this is the only way to do that."
