Lambert points to "huge week" for Villa with important trio of games

Brown

Paul Lambert admits this is a huge week for the football club as they face a trio of top games.

Lambert knows the West Brom, Bradford City and Millwall clashes in all three competitions - Barclays Premier League, Capital One Cup and FA Cup - could well define the rest of the season.

He said: "It's huge. I don't think you can underestimate the next three games. They're absolutely vital to the club.

"We go game by game. The derby is vital. Then we have a massive club semi-final. We know we have to turn it around.

"Then it's the FA Cup on Friday against Millwall. They are three vital games."

Lambert is confident he can lift Villa out of the dropzone but admits results have been driving him "absolutely mental."

Lambert has a real belief in his players, backing them to push up the Barclays Premier League table.

He says the run of defeats sprinkled with bad luck - typified by the defeat to Southampton despite a "relentless" second half - have thoroughly frustrated him.

But he insists that his "desire to succeed" pushes him on.

He said: "It drives you mad. It drives you absolutely mental at times like everybody else.

"I don't go home when I've been beaten thinking everything's great.

"You go home and you take it. You get aggressive with yourself, but you get on with it.

"I'm the same as every Villa fan, I hurt like everybody else.

"In the second half against Southampton we were relentless. I thought we deserved something.

"We never got the break. Southampton couldn't get out of their own half and their goalkeeper made some good saves.

"But that's all you can ask from people - an honest endeavour. They gave me absolutely everything. That's all you can ask."

On the dropzone, he added: "We'll get out. We've always got that belief. The club has round about this position for the past few years.

"The last time it was in the top six was when the gaffer was here, however many years ago that was."
