Laursen: Villa-Chelsea 4-4 was an incredible game!

Martin Laursen recalls the fantastic 4-4 festive draw with real relish - but accepts Paul Lambert will take a boring 1-0 win on Sunday.

That 2007 Boxing Day clash will live long in the memory of those who were present at Stamford Bridge.

Villa went 2-0 up courtesy of goals from Shaun Maloney before the Blues came charging back.

Zat Knight then saw red before Andriy Shevchenko netted from the spot. Shevchenko spanked Chelsea level and then Alex crashed in a third.

But Laursen equalised with a brilliant finish before Ricardo Carvalho saw red for a nasty lunge.

Michael Ballack's free-kick seemed to have won it but Gareth Barry made it 4-4 right at the death.

He said: "I remember that game very well! It was great!

"I had never played over the festive period in England before this game. I had heard so much about Christmas time for football in England and had never experienced it.

"Unfortunately I was always injured during the early period of my Villa career.

"Then we played that game on Boxing Day at Stamford Bridge. My family was there, I scored and we managed to get a remarkable 4-4 result. It was a great, game game.

"It was one of the best matches I have played in. We went two up, then they got three goals and I scored to make it 3-3. Ballack scored to make it 4-3 and then Gareth showed unbelievable bottle to keep his nerve and score a penalty right at the end. That was brave!

"We believed in ourselves throughout the game, even when Zat got sent off and even though Chelsea were unbeaten for a host of games. We had faith and got the result!

"I was happy with my finish. It was good. But with Ashley you always knew the delivery would be good so you just had to make the good run and gamble. It's up to you to make the run and make the goal happen.

"I scored a good goal against Petr Cech. My family were there to see it. I was just great!"

Lambert is an exponent of open, attacking, attractive football but Laursen thinks the boss would happily accept a dour 1-0 win from this latest content.

He said: "Paul would definitely take that! He'd be happy I'm sure!"

Make sure you back the boys against Tottenham.
