Liverpool v Villa: Lambert - I may stick with 3-5-2 long-term

Paul Lambert could well stick with his new 3-5-2 formation after giving an insight into his tactical switch.

Lambert insists the system might be one for the present - and the future.

Manager Lambert said there were two reasons for the move to the set-up made famous by Graham Taylor in the 1980s and Brian Little in the 1990s.

Instead of Kent Nielsen, Paul McGrath and Derek Mountfield under Taylor or Paul McGrath, Ugo Ehiogu and Gareth Southgate under Little, Lambert has Chris Herd, Nathan Baker and Ciaran Clark excelling.

Indeed their performance against Stoke was exemplary as the Potters pugnacious forwards were knocked into touch.

Lambert has been happy with how things have progressed since QPR and says the shape gives protection at the back and also allows for positivity in the attacking third too.

Interestingly it was a formation used at Borussia Dortmund during Lambert's successful season there as a player.

Dortmund's 1997 European Cup winning side featured a back three of Matthias Sammer, Jurgen Kohler and Martin Kree as they saw off Juventus 3-1 in the showpiece final.

Lambert said of the new system: "The reasons were a bit half and half for us bringing it in.

"First we played Reading and then QPR and we thought we had to protect things a little.

"But the system also allows you to have good passages of playing football and is a system that is working well."

Asked whether he'd stick with it when Ron Vlaar returns to full fitness, he added: "I don't see why not.

"I might vary it from time to time and the great thing is if you can adapt, then you've got good players on your hands."

Make sure you back the boys against Tottenham.
