Villa sparkle with top marks in food hygiene ratings

Brown

Villa are top of the league for food hygiene after achieving the highest mark possible.

Villa were handed 5* rating for cleanliness in their many restaurants and food outlets.

That ranges from Restaurant VMF to Stadium Concourses.

With the festive season fast approaching, foodies are being encouraged to check out hygiene ratings as well as menus.

And that bodes well for Villa, who have been commended once again for the impeccable environment they foster in food creation and service.

When an officer carries out a routine inspection they make an assessment of the overall level of hygiene at the business at the time of the inspection.

The business is then awarded a score of between 0* (urgent improvement necessary) at the bottom and 5* (very good) at the top.

The business can then display the certificate within the premises and this provides consumers with information about hygiene standards in food premises across the city.

Villa were handed their impressive rating at the launch of the food hygiene rating scheme, which took place at the McGregor Suite.

A selection of businesses from across the city, including Villa, attended the launch and were presented with their nFHRS certificate by the Chairman of the Food Standards Agency, Lord Rooker.

The nFHRS operates across England, Wales and Northern Ireland and has been adopted by 93% of local authorities.

The overarching aim of the scheme is to reduce the incidence of foodborne illness (1 million cases annually with 20,000 hospitalisations and 500 deaths) and the associated costs to the economy (£1.5 billion annually).

Food businesses such as restaurants, takeaways, caf├ęs, sandwich shops, pubs, hotels, hospitals, supermarkets and other retail outlets are given hygiene ratings as part of the scheme.

A recent public attitudes survey showed that food hygiene when eating out and food poisoning are the main concerns people have about food safety.

The nFHRS is of benefit to consumers that are either local residents or visitors to the city by giving them the power to make informed choices about where they buy and eat food within the city.

Head of Hospitality and Events Alison Plant said: "We are one of the 8,000 food businesses across the city and are regularly inspected by officers within the Environmental Health department.

"To have achieved the top rating yet again is testament to how seriously we take the food safety and how hard all team members work to ensure that we are a safe venue.

"We recognise that good food hygiene is good for business!"

Why not try Restaurant VMF this weekend.

It's open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
