QPR 1-1 Villa: Lambert hails Herd performance "outstanding"
Lambert called Herd's efforts "outstanding" as he excelled in a three-man backline at Loftus Road, alongside Ciaran Clark and Nathan Baker.
The match represented Herd's first since Swindon in the Capital One Cup in October.
But the key to Lambert's admiration was the position Herd adopted.
Herd is a midfielder by trade but slotted in to the defensive trio as if he'd played there all his life.
And this, Lambert admitted, after only two days training with the system.
He said: "Herdy was outstanding, he really was.
"We threw him in in training on Thursday and that was it.
"So to come in like that was really excellent. That's a compliment to him.
"We threw it on them the other day. Full credit to them."
Herd's performance was also acclaimed by goalscorer Brett Holman.
Holman has seen enough of his fellow Aussie to know he's an integral member of the claret and blue squad.
He added: "Herdy did unbelievably well.
"Considering he's been out for a good six weeks, to come back and play like that, hat's off to him. He was unbelievable.
"He's definitely a great man to have in the squad. Look at how comfortable he looks at centre-back but he can play in numerous roles and fill in for us. He did fantastically well."
