Villa v Arsenal: Westwood asks fans to help create "magical" night

By Paul Brown

Ashley Westwood has stressed the vital role of the claret and blue army - and called for them to create another "magical rocking atmosphere" on home soil against Arsenal.

Westwood admits being gobsmacked by the noise generated in our grand old stadium for the visit of Man Utd.

Villa's in-form midfielder was taken by the cacophony of sound evident in a rip-roaring 90 minutes of exhilarating entertainment against the Red Devils.

And he believes the players need more of the same if they are to shoot down the Gunners.

He said: "I am really looking forward to the game. Villa Park was absolutely rocking against Man Utd, it was a magical atmosphere to play in.

"The lads put a good shift in but it wasn't to be. We were up for the game and the determination to win was there in abundance but the backing of the fans and the noise levels they created spurred us on even more. That's what a vociferous support can do - fire you up even more.

"We just need the fans to stick with us now. We're a young group, we are improving and we will come through this period with the support of the fans.

"We're really looking forward to the Arsenal game and who wouldn't, being able to play at Villa Park as your home stadium.

"It is just one of the great grounds in the country, no question. When that Holte End and the other three stands get behind you, it gives you a real lift.

"The fans have been tremendous with us this season. Look at the end of the Man Utd game. Despite the defeat, the fans were still cheering us and applauding us at the end. That was a real positive thing.

"It's something that stood out for me. They appreciated we had given our all and entertained them with good football. They could see we really wanted it.

"That support, through good times and bad, is what we need because we're a young team and we're going to need the fans to stay with us. I'm confident they will."

Westwood insists the fans have made him feel right at home - as has the gaffer Paul Lambert.

The 22-year-old believes his smooth transition into the first team has been hastened by the manager's firm belief in his ability.

He added: "From day one, he's just been unbelievable. I really can't thank him enough.

"He's made me feel totally at home and he's given me a chance in the Barclays Premier League.

"He has shown real faith in me and I will never forget that. He said to me from the start 'if you're good enough, I will throw you in.' I took that on the moment I heard it.

"But all the lads are the same. Training is great and we're all pushing to be involved."
