County Cup match report: Villa Ladies 8-0 Bham/West Mids Police
Villa Ladies began their pursuit of the County Cup with a comfortable 8-0 win against Birmingham and West Midlands Police at Boldmere St Michaels.
The girls in claret and blue were in complete control of the game from start to finish against a very committed opposition.
Emma Follis continued her excellent form with two goals in three minutes, the first following a clever run down the right flank and the second after a powerful burst from the touchline on the left side gave her a one-on-one from which she made no mistake.
Katie Wilkinson added the third, her tenth of the season, after breaking the offside trap to slot home.
Fergusson bagged the fourth, driving in off the left touchline to receive Abbeyleigh Stringer's through-ball and roll into the bottom corner.
Natalie Gibson hit a brace 10 minutes before the break, one direct from a corner and the second a sharp finish after some outstanding combination play from Stringer, Tash Merritt and Sherry McCue.
After the break, Cusack scored the best goal of the game, picking the ball up in the right-back position before jinking past six tackles to arrow a finish into the bottom corner.
Mannion completed the scoring with a snap volley into the roof of the net from Erin Vaughan's driven corner.
Manager Joe Hunt said: "This match was about two things, first getting into the hat for the next round and second, giving players minutes on the pitch.
"We did our job which I'm very pleased about. We should've scored more and our play at times was laboured but in cup competitions it's all about getting into the next round.
"The pitch didn't really help our play either, very heavy so we struggled to zip it round with any purpose.
"The goals were all taken very well. It's nice that Livy, Aoife and Maddy all scored their first senior goals. All three were lovely finishes.
"We were planning on resting Maddy and Shez this week but found our numbers decreasing towards the end of the week so we had to include them.
"Fair play to the police though. They were committed and kept going right to the end. Their goalkeeper was outstanding.
"We'll have a good week at training and prepare for our League Cup game against WBA next weekend. Hopefully we'll get the result we need to progress to the quarter-finals."
