Stevens: Gaffer's faith has given me masses of confidence

By Paul Brown

Enda Stevens says he's received a massive injection of confidence from Paul Lambert.

Stevens admits the faith shown in playing him from the start against championship-chasers Manchester United has come as a welcome boost.

Stevens says his debut has been a "long time coming" after joining from Shamrock Rovers in January 2012.

But it was certainly worth the wait as he excelled against Antonio Valencia and the Red Devils in the cauldron of Villa Park.

He was devastated by the loss but still immensely proud of the momentous moment in his career.

He said: "It was great feeling to play.

"It was great to think the manager had the faith to throw me in against a team like Manchester United.

"I will take a lot of confidence from that and hopefully kick-on now.

"It's a dream for anyone to play against Man Utd. Luckily for me, it was on my debut.

"It was a brilliant experience. I thought we were excellent in the first-half.

"Christian was unbelievable while Gabby, Stevie and Andi were attacking brilliantly.

"We were holding them tight. The two lads in midfield - Barry and Ashley - were doing great and I can't remember them having any clear-cut chances.

"We caught them just before half-time to go in one-up and then doubled the advantage just after the break.

"We probably went two-up too early and they came roaring back as they do.

"It was my fault for the third goal because I didn't quite track his run and he got there ahead of me.

"It was a highlight, though, for me to be playing, being on the pitch for Aston Villa against Man Utd in front of a 40,000 crowd. Everything about it was amazing.

"But to play at this level you've got to be focused for 90 minutes and I switched off, so I'm gutted at the fact that I conceded a goal.

"It's not taken the gloss off making my debut, but I'm still devastated that we lost the game.

"You've got to maintain focus all the way through against top, top opposition."

Stevens is now hoping to keep his place for this weekend's encounter with champions Manchester City.

He added: "Obviously, I'm hoping to keep my place. I've got confidence.

"I'll go into training and work hard and hopefully I'll stay in the team for Manchester City.

"If we play like we did against Man Utd there's no reason why we can't get a result against Manchester City.

"It will be a great experience. It brings out the best in you. You know where you stand when you play against the best."
