Villa U19 v PSV U19: Devine relishing "massive" NextGen clash
Daniel Devine is upbeat about Villa's chances of qualifying for the NextGen Series knockout stages ahead of tonight's "massive" game against PSV Eindhoven.
The boys in claret and blue are two points adrift of second-placed PSV in Group 4 and Devine admits victory is essential to keep alive their qualification hopes.
The Dublin-born centre-back felt there was little between the two sides in the first leg in Holland earlier in the season.
On that occasion, PSV edged out Tony McAndrew's team with a 1-0 scoreline.
"I think at this stage it is a must win," said Devine.
"We've got four points at the minute and we need to get something from our two remaining games so it is a massive game.
"In the away game we were unlucky to lose 1-0 so at home hopefully we can play better and get the three points.
"They are very technical, they tend to try and play out from the back.
"But I thought we matched them and we just didn't take our chances on the night."
Devine insists Villa must improve on their second-half performances after admitting they let their standards drop in the two games against Celtic.
The young guns held on to win 2-1 in the Villa Park clash but let a two-goal lead slip in Glasgow last month.
"I thought we played well in the first-half but the second-half in both games let us down," added Devine.
"Luckily in the first one we held out but in the second one they managed to get back and get a draw.
"We need to come out for the second-half and do the same as in the first-half and let teams back into the game."
Devine is relishing being the senior man in the Villa side during this season's NextGen campaign.
The Irishman missed out last term with a knee injury but has featured in all four group games this season as one of the allotted overage players.
"It is a great competition," said Devine.
"I was disappointed to miss last year with my knee injury but it is great to be back now playing in it.
"It is good. Tony has said try and help the younger lads and talk to them and keep their concentration going."
