We were sorry to learn today of the passing of former Villa player Ivor Powell, who has died at the age of 96.

Born in Gilfach, Wales, Powell joined Villa from QPR for £17,500 in December 1948 and played 86 games for the club, scoring five goals.

He then moved to Port Vale as player-manager three years later.

He was awarded the MBE in the 2008 New Year Honours list and was still coaching at the University of Bath until two years ago - a feat that made him the oldest working football coach in the world.
