There were several who stood out, including Ashley Westwood, Ron Vlaar, Gabby Agbonlahor, Barry Bannan, Stephen Ireland and Christian Benteke.

Westwood made his first start for Villa - and what a beginning it was!

The midfield ace rarely gave the ball away and kept things ticking along in the central ground.

His partner Bannan moved the ball quickly with a delightful range of passing as well as showing exemplary defensive skill also.

Vlaar, who growled his delight at fans at the final whistle, was a rock at the back while Ireland knitted midfield brilliantly with the forwards.

The two strikers on hand, Benteke and Agbonlahor, were in tremendous form, scaring the life out of the Black Cats defence every time they went forward.
