Westwood: Thanks to Brett and Fabian for helping me shine
Westwood was magnificent in central midfield, showing his range of passing and rarely giving the ball away during the 1-0 win.
The central midfielder admits being a touch nervous when Paul Lambert told him he'd be starting at the Stadium of Light.
He said: "It's always nice to win. The gaffer told me an hour before the game that I would be playing and it took a bit of getting used to.
"But Fabian just told me to go out and do what I've been doing in training.
"Brett was sitting the other side of me and he said the same, so that gave me great confidence.
"I thanked Fabian after the game because it meant a lot that he had said that, coming from someone who had been there and done it.
"He told me that now I have a chance to stake a claim to stay in the team.
"That's hopefully what I can do now."
Westwood thinks the celebrating of players and fans at the end of the game just goes to show what the victory means.
He added: "Sunderland isn't an easy place to go to because Martin O'Neill has them well drilled.
"But there was a real team spirit and when we went to the fans at the end you could see how much it meant to the players."
Make sure you're here to roar on the lads against Manchester United.
