Villa 1-1 Norwich: Herd says Bennett will be "better and stronger"

By Paul Brown

Chris Herd has backed Joe Bennett to come back "better and stronger" following his dismissal against Norwich.

Bennett was sent off by referee Phil Dowd for two bookable offences, the second only six minutes into the second half.

Herd believes it was a "harsh decision" to hand out a red card to the left-back but thinks it won't stop the 22-year-old improving his game in the weeks, months and years ahead.

Herd knows all about the agony of being sent off after being given his marching orders against West Brom in the previous campaign.

He said: "I think it was a bit of a harsh decision but that's part of football.

"I am confident Joe will bounce back and get better and stronger."

That opinion was echoed by Brad Guzan, who believes the young defender will bounce back.

He continued: "Joe will be fine. He was obviously disappointed in the dressing room after the game but you have to move on.

"You learn from your mistakes and keep moving forward. That's what Joe will do."

Boss Paul Lambert believes Bennett left himself in a "precarious position" following his first-half booking but thinks he will learn from the incident.

He added: "I have spoken to him. When you're booked in the first half it can be a bit precarious.

"If you do anything silly you get a second yellow. He will learn from it."
