Staunton: Great competition between Bennett and Lichaj at left-back
![]()
Steve Staunton is relishing seeing the battle between Joe Bennett and Eric Lichaj for the left-back spot at Villa. Staunton was brilliant in that role during two spells in claret and blue between 1991-98 and 2000-2003. And the former Republic of Ireland international has seen enough of Bennett and Lichaj to know the tussle for the role will be fierce. The 43-year-old is a big fan of both players. He told AVTV: "Eric has come through the ranks and he's done very well. I've been impressed with him. "I know he's mainly a right-back but he's looked comfortable on the left too. "Young Joe has come in from Middlesbrough and he looks a terrific prospect too. "He's got a lovely left foot and a bit of pace, which I wouldn't know anything about! "He's done well. I watched him against West Brom and he looked good. That will fire up the competition at left-back. "You need that. Competition is essential at any club. If you haven't got it players get complacent." Make sure you're here to back the boys against Norwich City. Keywords
