Guzan: Decision to rejoin Villa in the summer was a no-brainer

By Dan Harrison

Brad Guzan admits rejoining Villa this summer was "a no-brainer" - and he believes the decision has already paid off.

Guzan's contract expired at the end of last season but he re-signed for the club in July after agreeing a new three-year-deal.

The American goalkeeper has played in six of Villa's nine competitive matches under new boss Paul Lambert.

It has been an impressive turnaround for Guzan, who has spent most of his claret and blue career as understudy to Brad Friedel and Shay Given.

After holding talks with Lambert over the summer, the 27-year-old knew Villa was still the "best fit" for him.

"As a goalkeeper you always want to be playing games," he said.

"It's been a good run of games. You want to be out there in front of the fans, getting points and hope the team can be successful.

"For me, it was one of those, after I had a conversation with the manager, I weighed up my options and I still felt like I could contribute to the club.

"I hadn't shown what I could bring to the table. I still felt as though I had more to give.

"When the opportunity did come back, with everything else going on, i thought this would be my best fit.

"It's been a good decision. The other offers were in this country, I wanted to remain in England.

"For me it was never a doubt of leaving the country or going back to the MLS.

It was finding the right position where I could progress my career and move forward and really put my stamp on the game and ultimately the club."

Guzan, who joined Villa from Chivas USA in 2008, was determined to take his chance after positive discussions with the new manager.

"I had a really good conversation with the manager saying everyone comes in on an even keel and everyone is going to get an opportunity and it's up to the players to take that chance," he added.

"That was the conversation and it was a no-brainer."
