Vlaar: Defensive partnership with Clark will get even stronger
Ron Vlaar says his partnership with Ciaran Clark is getting stronger by the game - but insists the defensive duo can still make plenty of improvements.
Vlaar reckons the newly-assembled Villa side are showing signs of settling down well together.
The Villa skipper is encouraged by the start he and Clark have made as a central defensive pairing but believes they can get even better.
Vlaar has developed a good working relationship with the Republic of Ireland stopper since arriving from Feyenoord in the summer.
"The partnership with Ciaran is good but I think we have to improve, for the team and for ourselves," he said.
"I think we can work on that every day and that is what we are doing.
"Communication can always be better and we talk to each other a lot about moments in the game, situations that have happened and what can happen in future.
"It is getting better and better but we still need to improve.
"We talk about it a lot together and I think everybody has to improve.
"If you believe you can then you can do it every day. It is a long way but we have to keep it up and move forward."
Vlaar felt the back four did well to keep Tottenham at bay for long periods in Sunday's 2-0 defeat at White Hart Lane.
But he is seeking an improvement as the team look to keep more clean sheets.
"We kept it close together, the distance between the striker and defence was good," he added.
"Once in a while we had to go one-on-one and we did very well because they have a lot of speed up front but they didn't get many chances.
"I think we had the best chances after half-time."
