Monday media watch [08.10.12 PM]: More Spurs reaction

Express and Star: Paul Lambert today defended his decision to leave Aston Villa striker Darren Bent on the substitutes' bench for the second week in succession. Villa suffered a 2-0 defeat at White Hart Lane with £24m poacher Bent unable to perform a rescue act as had done against Albion seven days earlier.

Express and Star: The 2-0 scoreline might have been the same as last season but the Villa philosophy provided a welcome contrast. White Hart Lane was the scene of Villa's 'Great Surrender' under Alex McLeish in November 2011 and pinpointed as an indicator of how the season would pan out as they rolled over and let Spurs bank the points. So, 11 months later, it was pleasing to see those in claret and blues shirts step on to the pitch without thinking they were already beaten. That they did not simply down tools and bow to the superior quality of the opposition players was encouraging.

Goal.com: Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark has been called up to the Republic of Ireland squad to face Germany and the Faroe Islands after club-mate Richard Dunne was forced to withdraw with injury. Clark is able to play in midfield and defence, with Sean St Ledger and Glenn Whelan also ruled out of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Sky Sports: Spanish striker Xisco is set to make his first appearance for Newcastle United in more than a year at Villa Park on Monday night. The 26-year-old has been included in Willie Donachie's squad to face Aston Villa in the Professional Development League.

ITV: Villa Park has been included in the long list of potential venues for the Rugby World Cup 2015, joining other iconic venues such as Wembley Stadium, Twickenham, the Millennium Stadium and the Olympic Stadium. Four stadiums from across the Midlands have been announced as potential match venues up for consideration to host matches during the Rugby World Cup in 2015.
