Leeds Ladies 1-2 Villa Ladies: Clarke and Davies net in away win
It was the perfect response from the claret and blues after last week's disappointing 4-0 defeat at the hands of Cardiff.
Leeds made a strong start but Villa grew stronger as the first half went on and Davies forced the home team's keeper into two fine saves before the break.
Joe Hunt's team took that momentum in to the second period and they came close to taking the lead when skipper Dani Petrovic headed just wide from Erin Vaughan's cross.
The breakthrough finally came on 70 minutes when the impressive Maddie Cusack gained possession inside her own half and fed Abbeyleigh Stringer.
Stringer released Clarke down the left hand side and the forward made a driving run into the box before slotting past the keeper.
Five minutes later it was 2-0. Once again, Villa's high pressing game resulted in them regaining possession before Davies was released in the box.
She rounded the Leeds keeper to fire the second goal into an empty net.
Leeds responded strongly and pulled one back from a corner 10 minutes from time.
Villa held on for the victory and coach Hunt felt it was fully deserved.
"The girls got what they deserved," he said.
"They stuck to the game plan and came away with the three points.
"We had some fantastic variation in our play which caused Leeds problems but what pleased me the most was the energy and commitment from the players.
"For 90 minutes we worked together to dig out the result.
"Losing 4-0 at home to Cardiff the week before hurt everyone and this was the response I wanted.
"We need to show more consistency in our performances but full credit must be given to the players.
"All 14 players that got on to the pitch played their part but Natasha Merritt, who made her first start since the Watford game, came in and was immense.
"She set the tempo for the game and all the others followed her. She was unbelievable."
