Tottenham v Villa: Guzan excited to be facing "remarkable" Friedel
Brad Guzan is looking forward to sharing the spotlight this weekend with the man who kept him in the shadows at Villa Park.
Guzan and Brad Friedel both arrived at Villa in the summer of 2008 but it was the former Blackburn and Liverpool keeper who played regularly while Guzan had to be content with the occasional cup appearance.
But Chicago-born Guzan still has the utmost respect for his fellow American, who is still going strong at the age of 41 after joining Spurs last season.
"What Brad is doing at his age is remarkable," he said.
"If you look at his performances, he's been fantastic for them, making good saves and helping them pick up points along the way and.
"He keeps himself fit, he helps the team gets result and that's and that's all you can ask for from a goalkeeper.
"He's an extremely good professional when it comes to keeping himself fit and sharp and ready.
"For him age is just a number. You wouldn't be able to tell from his performances what age he is."
During his time with Villa, Friedel broke the record for the most consecutive Premier League appearances - a sequence which has now passed the 300 mark.
Like the rest of the football world, Guzan has nothing but admiration for that achievement.
"I think his record of consecutive Premier League games speaks for itself," he said.
"It's testament to the way he is as a professional and keeping himself in good shape.
"When he was here it was a matter of keeping myself fit and ready because as a goalkeeper you never know when you are going to get that chance. When it does come you have to be ready for it.
"He's always fit, always ready, and always puts in a good performance for the team.
"At times it was frustrating but that's part of being a goalkeeper and part of being in that position.
"We had a really good working relationship, in terms of on the field, off the field, sort of thing.
"It's hard not to take things away from his game in terms of his consistency and his preparation and his ability to train day in day out and go into the weekend and put in a brilliant performance.
"For me as a young goalkeeper coming to this country, working with a goalkeeper who has been in the game for so long really helped me."
