Vlaar: Captaining Villa was a proud moment for me

By Dan Harrison

Ron Vlaar has spoken of his pride at being handed the captain's armband for Villa's victory over Swansea City.

Vlaar was named as skipper for Saturday's clash after manager Paul Lambert decided to give Darren Bent a break from the role to concentrate on scoring goals.

It was a proud moment for the Dutch defender, who is confident he has the credentials for the job.

"Of course, being made Villa captain makes me very proud and I'm very happy with that," said Vlaar.

"I think I know what to expect from myself and I want to do a good job.

"The manager said before kick-off that I was captain on Saturday and that was a very positive signal from the manager to me."

Vlaar, who joined Villa from Feyenoord in the summer, is determined to repay Lambert's faith.

"I don't know exactly how it will go on but I don't want to let him down and, hopefully, it will be important for the team," he added.

"I was captain of Feyenoord for the last two years and that was a team which was very young. I'm 27 and I feel I'm experienced so I'm used to it now.

"The team spirit was really great on Saturday. That's the way we have to play. If we do that, our quality will shine through."
