Villa U19 v Celtic U19 preview: Carruthers ready to go on front foot

By Dan Harrison

Samir Carruthers says Villa must be at their free-flowing best to achieve a much-needed victory against Celtic in the NextGen Series.

Carruthers admits the boys in claret and blue will treat Wednesday's clash at Villa Park as a fresh start after losing their first two Group 4 encounters.

The Republic of Ireland U21 midfielder wants Villa to be more ruthless in the final third after failing to score in last month's defeat at PSV Eindhoven.

But Carruthers felt he and his colleagues learned plenty of lessons from the game in Holland.

"In last year's competition we only lost two games in the group stages and they were both away from home," he said.

"Losing a home game has put us on the back foot a bit.

"We will start again on Wednesday and hopefully we can get the first three points of the campaign then hopefully kick on from there.

"We kept the ball well but we weren't really carving out too many chances.

"They were clinical and they finished the chance they had and beat us.

"We should have created more chances and scored more goals.

"With the players we have got in our team we are normally more creative but we didn't do it enough when we went to PSV.

"But it was a lesson learned that we need to create more and play without fear."

Carruthers made his first NextGen appearance of the season at PSV after missing the defeat to Sporting Lisbon.

He is relishing another crack at European glory after starring in Villa's run to the quarter-finals last term.

"How can you not want to play against the best teams in Europe?" he said.

"We are playing Celtic this week and we have already played the likes of Marseille, Ajax, Fenerbahce and Sporting Lisbon.

"We are testing ourselves against the best players in that age group in Europe so if you do well it tells you that you are good enough to play at this level."
