Agbonlahor relishing healthy competition in forward ranks
Gabby Agbonlahor has hailed the strength of Villa's attacking options and admits he has a battle on his hands to earn a starting spot.
Paul Lambert bolstered his forward line with the deadline day acquisitions of Christian Benteke from Genk and Jordan Bowery from Chesterfield.
And Agbonlahor reckons the healthy competition in the goalscoring ranks bodes well for the claret and blues.
"I think this season it's going to be interesting because there's a lot of young strikers doing really well in training," he said.
"It's going to be hard for everyone. No-one in the squad is guaranteed a starting place.
"They're going to be coming after my place and that's the same as when I was coming through, I was going for other player's places.
"It keeps the older lads, not just myself, but in every position, on their toes and gives us all competition.
"The gaffer said he was going to try and bring in a few more faces to help the squad so it's going to be good competition.
"I think that shows in training, where everyone is putting in 100 per cent, and in the games where everyone's trying to impress."
Agbonlahor has been impressed with the new recruits to the Villa squad so far.
As Villa's longest-serving player, he has had a big role to play in helping the newcomers settle in.
"There have been some good signings and the younger ones especially that have come in have got a lot to prove," he added.
"They're looking sharp in training too, so there are good things to come.
"Christian Benteke looks like a nice, big, target player.
"I haven't really seen much of him in training, but I'll look forward to playing with him when he comes back.
"I think they are ready and they're already settled in because we've got a good friendly squad.
"Everyone helps players get settled in quickly."
