Villa U21 v Southampton U21 preview: Cowans looking for response
Five days on from a six-goal thriller on the south coast, Villa and Southampton meet again this afternoon in the Barclays U21 Premier League.
Gordon Cowans was unhappy with the way his claret and blues side surrendered a 3-0 advantage in Monday's clash at Staplewood.
And the European Cup winner will be determined to see the young guns make amends in today's return fixture at Bodymoor Heath [ko 2pm].
The three Daniels - Devine, Johnson and O'Brien - fired Villa into a three-goal lead against the Saints before the home side came roaring back through Corby Moore, Lloyd Isgrove and Sam Hoskins.
"We went three-up and then all of a sudden we took our foot off the gas, got sloppy and made stupid mistakes," said Cowans.
"The concentration levels need to be higher. We had a young side out but we need to learn quickly, very quickly because that second half performance was not acceptable.
"There are no excuses. We have to do better than that."
Villa are still unbeaten in the revamped U21 competition after opening up with a 3-0 victory over Stoke City at Bodymoor Heath.
The boys in claret and blue will once again be without a number of players this afternoon because of international call-ups.
Michael Drennan is in action for Republic of Ireland U21s in Latvia today.
Goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist has a European U21 Championship qualifier for Switzerland against Estonia on Monday, while Ireland U21 duo Samir Carruthers and Derrick Williams will face Italy in the same competition.
