International Round-Up: Holman on form as Australia win
![]()
Australia will head into their World Cup qualifier in Jordan full of confidence after bouncing back to form with a 3-0 win over Lebanon in Beirut on Friday morning. Tim Cahill and Matt McKay found the back of the net within three minutes midway through the first half before Archie Thompson netted late to seal Australia's first triumph since February. Villa star Brett Holman, who came on for the final half hour of the game, played Thompson in for the final, decisive third goal. The game was played at the Saida Municipal Stadium, surrounded by military tanks and armed guards. In all honesty, it was an even more emphatic win than the scoreline suggests, with chances galore for the Socceroos throughout the ninety minutes. Meanwhile, Derrick Williams and Samir Carruthers watched from the bench as the Republic of Ireland U21s lost 2-1 to Hungary in a Euro 2013 qualifier in Szektoi. Benjamin Siegrist was also an unused substitute as Switzerland U21s held Spain to a 0-0 draw in a Euro 2013 clash in Slon.
