Newcastle 1-1 Villa player reaction: Clark insists critics silenced

By Paul Brown

Ciaran Clark believes the point at Newcastle will have silenced a few of Villa's critics.

Paul Lambert's men found themselves in the spotlight at the bottom of the table following defeats to West Ham and Everton.

After the home game, in particular, analysts appeared to accentuate Villa's fragilities and underplay Everton's quality.

Clark thinks that pundit pessimism has been put to bed, with Villa showing their quality in the exciting 1-1 draw on Tyneside.

He said: "I think we proved a point after the first two games.

"At West Ham we started off brightly but never seemed to create any end product, and last week was a bit of a letdown for us.

"We know we are much better than that and hopefully we showed that against Newcastle.

"We were creating chances and looked like we were going to score when we went forward. That's what we're all about and hopefully we can take this result into the next game now.

"Newcastle had a few half chances and Brad pulled out a good save in the first half. But other than that I can't remember us getting worked that much.

"Hopefully we can use this result and hopefully get a win in the next game."

Clark was thrilled to get on the scoresheet against the Magpies and admits he'd have been slaughtered in the dressing room if he'd missed with the header from point-blank range.

He added: "I was very happy to with the goal, it's always nice to score.

"As soon as the ball came in from Ron, I went up and I heard Baz shout 'flick it', so I flicked it on and luckily he was on his own.

"As soon as I saw it was Baz out wide I thought I'd get in the box and get on the end of it. He couldn't have put the ball in any better.

"I couldn't really miss from there, I'd have gotten a bit of stick and I'd be devastated if I did.

"As soon as Baz and Marc get out wide you know they're going to be putting in great crosses."
